Company Network promotes Social Responsibility in Importing

In 2001 Finnish companies founded a network to advance social responsibility in importing. The network presently consists of enterprises representing both industrial enterprises and enterprises in the trade sector. The Central Chamber of Commerce of Finland coordinates the voluntary cooperation between Finnish companies.

The aim is to improve working conditions as well as social conditions throughout the supply chain. Improving social performance is seen as an ongoing process, which requires close cooperation between importers, suppliers and subcontractors. The network aims to provide practical advice on how to improve social responsibility in importing.
The activities include

  • arranging seminars
  • developing tools for improving social preformance (e.g Business Social Compliance Initiative)
  • benchmarking and spreading best business practices
  • raising general awareness of the matters related to social responsibility
  • networking with other organisations

The network has agreed on common principles, which are based on the International Labour Organisation Convention, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Companies that wish to join the network must be commited to following the common principles on a systematic, long-term basis to ensure the ethical quality of their products.
